In the heart, in vivo CBD treatment protects against ischemia and reperfusion damage and against cardiomyopathy associated with diabetes. Similarly, in a different model of ischemia-reperfusion, CBD has been shown to reduce infarct size and increase blood flow in animal models of stroke, sensitive to 5HT1A receptor antagonism. Although acute or chronic CBD treatment appears to have little effect on hemodynamics, CBD reduces the cardiovascular response to stress models, applied systemically or intracranially, inhibited by a 5HT1A receptor antagonist. In the blood, CBD influences white blood cell survival and death, white blood cell migration, and platelet aggregation.

Taken together, these preclinical data appear to support a positive role of CBD treatment in the heart and in the peripheral and cerebral vasculature. However, further work is needed to strengthen this hypothesis, establish mechanisms of action and determine if CBD-like responses would be observed in humans. To minimize cardiovascular damage, you can consider an oral dose, through a CBD edible, a tincture, or even a pure CBD oil. In addition, while the FDA has approved some CBD drugs to treat certain diseases, don't expect over-the-counter CBD to be safe or beneficial for heart failure, Lundgren says.
